HOW TO TRAIN A CAT
When it comes to learning How To Train A Cat, there is one simple thing you need to understand. The thing you need to know is the main keys of cat behavior. Cats have very different behaviors than dogs or any other animal. Forcing a training tactic or trick on your cat won't work.
Cats are independent creatures. They tend to stick to themselves. However, some cats are very loving. Despite your cat's temperament you need to learn how to train your cat. If a cat develops a bad behavior, for whatever reason, it is not a fun situation. From biting and scratching on people and furniture to litter box accidents and getting on the counter, it can all be corrected. Some cats are easier to train than others, but you can train any cat if you learn how to train a cat properly.
Whether you're just starting out with a new kitten or you've had an unruly cat for years, there are three key things that you should keep in mind when trying to figure out how to train your cat.
First of all, cats learn through
experience. For instance, if you feed your cat every time he starts yowling and
complaining, it becomes a learned behavior - he'll continue his yowling,
thinking that it's the proper way to signal hunger. With this in mind, it's
important to always punish the bad behavior and reward the good.
Second, always talk to your cat.
You may feel a little silly at first, but there's no doubt that cats can
recognize and register the sound of your voice, the emphasis, and even certain
words. When you want to discourage bad behavior, pick a word or a sentence and
keep repeating it to your cat. Your cat will eventually realize that he's done
something wrong. Conversely, when you want to reward good behavior, pick
another word and repeat it in the same manner.
Third, remember that cats can
become agitated and aggressive in response to serious stress or changes in their
environment. If your cat has suddenly become irritable when before he was
agreeable and good-natured, it may be due to recent upheaval. This can be
brought on by something as obvious as the introduction of a new pet or as
simple as moving your cat's litter box.
To potty train a feline you have
to go through a process of trial and error with different boxes and litter.
Therefore if you get a selection of boxes, your little tiger will show you
which he/she prefers. The same goes with litter that you will be using. You
should provide a variety for your furry friend to choose from and they will
definitely let you know which they approve of.
Once you have their favourite
combination you should rub your pet's paws into the box to leave a scent for
them to return to. You should also position the box in a room which they use
often and not some obscure place in the house. If you live in a multi-cat
household, you should have one more litterbox than there are cats. This will
solve any toilet disputes between your pets.
To stop your little tiger from
scratching up the furniture you should get him/her a scratching post. To get
them to use the post you should make it appealing by adding feathers and catnip
spray. Also you can stop them from clawing a particular area by covering the
area with kitchen foil and spraying the area with repellent.
To teach your furry friends not
to be aggressive you need to learn how to massage their heads. If they show
super aggression you may need a towel to cover over their body but you must
expose their head and paws. Firmly push their shoulders down then start to
firmly but gently massage their head in a circular fashion. This really helps
when you are trying to get them to the vets or they need calming down.
Your cat may seem disinterested
in learning at times but be persistent with training. The more time you spend
with your cat, the stronger your bond will be. Your cat should respond well to
teaching. Offer cat treats as a reward to reinforce the learning process. The
more time you spend, the more you will get your cat to respond. If you learn
how to train a cat the right way, you can prevent future unwanted behavior
problems and your cat will be a happy, well mannered member of your family.
The
benefits of training your cat
Just because cats typically lead solitary, individual lives doesn't mean that they necessarily want to do so.In fact, many cats are incredibly affectionate and loving by nature - they just need you to demonstrate your leadership and initiate the rapport-building process.
Cats are often underestimated when it comes to the training process, simply because the average owner has very little need to attempt any sort of training at all. Unlike with dogs (whose ability to learn is very well documented) there's no need to train cats in the basics of pet protocol like house training and bathing. Consequently, relatively few people are aware of their cat's abilities in this area.
Training your cat is a fantastic way to enrich your cat's life:
- It builds a strong rapport between you and your cat.
- Because training underlines your authority (your cat has to do what you want to get what he wants), it helps to curb dominant behavior.
- It keeps your cat's mind active and stimulated.
- Anxious and highly-strung cats are reassured and soothed by the repetition and routine of training.
- It's great interactive play, and teaches good social skills.
